Experience Days - Skid Pan Driving

My girlfriend loves the buzz of driving cars. She’s always loved the idea of car racing, rally driving and the like (what a tomboy, eh?!) so for her birthday last year I arranged to take her on a skid pan. We personally went to Castle Combe and it was a good day.

The participants were split up into groups of 3 and there wer 2 cars available - a rear-wheel drive and a front-wheel drive. The pattern was as follows:

1) Training on what to do
2) Get into the car
3) 2 or 3 laps round the course
4) Change driver
5) Once all drivers are done, change to the other car
6) Repeat as per 3) and 4)
7) when complete, go back to 1 and learn new skill then go out and try it

So part of the fun is not only are you loearning new driving skills by actually going out and trying it, but there’s also the team spirit or working with a few others and also the fun of being driven round if you’re not actually doing the driving. In that way, the fun keeps on going unlike some experiences where you’d have to stand around and wait for other people to go round.

The track was boring to look at, but great fun to drive round apparently (I was a spectator) - and they kept spraying it with oil and water to keep it slippery.

So who would this suit? Pretty much anyone who can drive and doesn’t mind making a wally of themselves. Because lets be honest, it’s highly likely you’ll lose control and spin the car or drive into something! If that’s your idea of fun, sign up today!
